Exposed breasts and explicit language still fell foul of the censors, but in a ground-breaking relaxation of the rules, Singapore viewers are finally being exposed to the US television hit Sex and the City.
Viewers in the conservative island state have previously been denied the raunchy exploits of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte, the quartet of independent New York friends.
The first two episodes were broadcast after a 10pm watershed on Friday, after recent changes in media laws allowed the series to be aired under a new television rating system. Previously, Singaporean aficionados relied on imported video and DVD recordings. ...more

Pay cable finds shelf life on DVD

Tom Blair is a huge fan of the hit cable TV series Six Feet Under, but he prefers to get his fix on DVD. Even if you don't have HBO, you can still follow original series like Six Feet Under on DVD, as long you don't mind waiting a couple of seaons. HBO
He's not watching Season 4 on HBO; he's not even a subscriber. Instead, he's planning a marathon viewing session for Season 2, which has just been released on a $100 DVD box set.
"It's like watching a new, original play every episode with the very best production values," Blair says. "The action is incredible, the plots are weird, and watching it on DVD lets me follow the story without having to wait a week."
Blair, 55, a magazine editor from San Diego, isn't alone.
Henry McGee, president of HBO Home Video, says many DVDs of HBO shows such as Sex and the City, The Sopranos and Six Feet Under are sold to non-HBO subscribers. "Fully 50% of Sopranos purchasers do not subscribe to HBO," McGee says ...more
